As soon as it gets this easy to check in to places (bars, retail, car showrooms etc) I expect location based check ins and the egocasting broadcasts they will create to skyrocket.

When we opened our SoHo store in 2008, we were introduced to the resourceful culture of "curb-mining": the act of finding furniture and art on the street. Now that a year has passed, we decided to conduct a curb-mining experiment of our own to celebrate our one-year anniversary in New York.

On November 4-5, 25 Real Good Chairs were dropped around NYC, free for the take. Many were GPS-enabled. Watch the film to see what happened.

As of just now they have 282,606 users.

There's a pretty simple method of counting users via quora.com user @angusdav 

To get an up to date answer, you can go to http://foursquare.com/user/-240000 and change the trailing number to your best guess.  You must use "The Price Is Right" algorithm: you can guess right and be under, but if you go over the answer, you will be redirected to their home page.

Location based services like foursquare are going to get really big this year. It's going to be interesting to see how they grow and how and if advertisers can integrate their service offerings.
